Immersion

Why SPAIN ?

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world after Chinese, and the second most used language in international communication. By learning Spanish, the student will be able to communicate with over 500 million people all over the world.

In the last few years, Latin American countries have experienced a big economic growth, and many of the world’s largest economies are demanding Spanish speakers.

Due to the growing importance of Spanish, Ken’s is offering a complete Spanish program aimed at young people aged 13 to 18. In a full immersion setting at both the cultural and academic level, students can benefit from one of the best language learning experiences there are. We at Ken’s take the student’s priorities into consideration and our programs reflect this.

Education System

Education in Spain is compulsory from the age of 6 to 16, and even though it is regulated by the Ministry of Education, regional governments are in charge of managing and financing the schools in their territory.

There are 3 types of schools:

Public Schools: It is the most highly demanded option in Spain. Education is free, and classrooms have an average of 22 students.

Semi-private School: They are usually catholic schools and there is a monthly charge. Classrooms tend to have an average of 20 students.

Private Schools: Highly renowned schools with reduced classes and better structural and educational means. They usually offer boarding accommodation. Enrollment is usually more selective in terms of grades and their price is higher.

Generally speaking, students have three holiday periods: two weeks in December, one week in March or April and two and a half months in summer.

The school year starts in early September and ends in mid-June.

On weekdays, students mix 8 to 10 subjects every year with 6 hours of daily classes. They are graded after each trimester.

Academic Information

Due to the education system in Spain differing from Canada’s, students must speak with their guidance counsellors and principals in order to organize their academic schedules for the year of the exchange. With our experience, we recommend the following as options for the students to discuss with their counsellors:

  • Online classes while students are in Spain (no more than 3)
  • Summer school before the exchange and/or after
  • Students have extra credits already from previous years
  • Spanish language credit (if applicable-check with your district)
  • Peer leadership courses
  • Take more difficult courses that require in presence studies like math, science, chemistry etc., in the first semester and in the 2nd semester courses that teachers can allow freedom, provide projects or work to do while in Spain and students can join back in easily (e.g. Cooking, Art, Dance, History, Religion, English etc.)

All the schools we offer are placed in very safe cities which students will find easy to move around in.

Family accommodation:

We want the students to be comfortable and happy, and the families are welcoming and generous. We also guarantee no more than 1 international student per home, unless otherwise requested.
The family will provide full pension as well as laundry facilities and change of bed linens. We ensure a well-balanced diet, respecting the preferences of the students to the best of their ability and ensuring the safety of the student with regards to any allergies.
In almost all cases, students will have access to Wi-Fi in the home and may use the telephone to receive calls. They will have sheet and towel changes weekly as a minimum.

Most families are no more than 10 minutes by car, or a 20 minute walk from the school.
The hosts will accompany the student to the school or to the bus stop to ensure they know their way the first day. One of the characteristics of the host families is the constant effort they put in to ensure that the student feels integrated and welcome in the customs and language in Spain. This is just an additional benefit for the student and their experience. It is about finding a place to call home abroad.

Before you leave, you will get all the information as well as a welcome video of the family.

Residential accommodation:

If the student wants to go to a private school, he/she may be accommodated in the boarding school together with both Spanish and international students.

Once you have registered for the program, we will ask you to prepare a short description of yourself (hobbies, abilities, worries, dreams…)

Maybe you already know the city you would like to go to, however you have to take into account that the final decision is up to the school.

Here at Ken’s, we work with many different schools, but your destination will depend on your profile.

We recommend that you allow us to guide you because at the end of the day, your well-being is our primary concern.

  • Improvement of the language level through a complete linguistic immersion
  • Complete cultural immersion in Spain: the student lives in a host family or in a residence and studies in a local school together with other students of his/her age.
  • Personal growth and development: greater self-confidence, international friends and an outstanding training for their academic future and working career.
  • Show maturity and motivation for the program
  • Have a minimum level of Spanish
  • Have a good academic record (report cards from the last two years will be required)
  • Accept the program rules
  • Have a letter of recommendation from their school

In order to register in our academic term program, you should visit our webpage, create an account and register.

Once you are registered, we will create your profile where you will be able to see your enrollment process then you may book an interview day and time so that we can get to know you a little bit better and give you advice.

This profile will be your personal space where you will be able to manage your trip easily: you will find registration forms; you will be able to choose subjects, make payments, ask for visa guidance, and receive host family information, subject recognition, school information…

Our Schools

Teruel is a small Spanish city with a population of almost 36.000, situated in the south of Aragon. It is known for its Moor art and architecture heritage, part of which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Teruel is also reconigzed for its unusual Spanish climate, characterized by cold winters and dry, hot summers.

Among the many tourist attractions you may find the buildings covered in Moor design, the Mausoleum of the Two Lovers of Teruel, the Torico Square, and the paleontological museum, Dinópolis. The most prominent monuments are the Santa Maria Church (a Cathedral of the Diocese of Teruel), as well as the El Salvador, San Martin and San Pedro towers. At the base of the San Pedro tower you will find the church, from which it received its name.

Teruel

As far as festivals are concerned, Teruel hosts a weekend Medieval festival in February to commemorate the history of the Two Lovers of Teruel. Additionally, it celebrates Easter Week (end of March, beginning of April) and the Angel festivals or the infamous, running of the bulls in July.

Why choose Teruel for a Spanish language acquisition program?

  • It is a small and safe city
  • Strategic placement between major Spanish cities
  • For the quality of its homestays
  • For the excellent teaching methodology of its schools
  • For the friendliness of its people
  • In Teruel, the students will be able to immerse fully in the daily language and life of Spain

Zaragoza is the capital of the autonomous community (province, essentially) of Aragon. With a population of around 700,000, it is the fifth largest city in the country. It is home to magnificent historical buildings like the Basilica del Pilar, La Seo Cathedral and the Aljaferia Palace, which along with other buildings in the community form part of the Moor Architecture of Aragon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Zaragoza

Why choose Zaragoza for a Spanish language and culture program?

  • It is a vibrant and historical city
  • For its many high quality schools
  • It has excellent intra-city transportation as well as high-speed train connections to other major Spanish cities
  • Despite its size, it maintains its Spanish cultural identity to a greater degree than cities of comparable size

Castellón de la Plana, with a population of around 170.000, is the capital city of the province of Castellón, the northernmost and least populous of the three provinces of Valencia. While some of the oldest ruins in Castellon date back to the Moors in the tenth or eleventh century, the area has been inhabited for millennia. The founding of the city itself came after James I of Aragon reconquered the area in the 1200s. Shortly thereafter the town was moved – upon royal command – to the plain below the hill upon which the first ruins still stand.

Castellón

Throughout the modern city one can find other historical relics: a remaining wall from the first Carlist War in 1837; a 17th century textile market; the Fadri Tower, the construction of which began in 1440; and many more. Further attractions include the central market, various museums of art, history, and science, and spacious parks full of trees, fountains, ponds, statues, and memorials to musicians, artists, and soldiers.

The economy of the modern city (and province, also called Castellón) rests on tourism, some crafts (ceramics, tiles and textiles) and some industries. Historically, the area has been known for citrus fruits (Valencian oranges, etc.), and orange trees still line some streets.

Why choose Castellón de la Plana for a Spanish language and culture program?

  • It is a vibrant and historical city
  • For its high quality schools
  • It has a small-city feel with big-city amenities
  • For its strategic placement on the Mediterranean Sea, an hour from Valencia
  • Students will be able to immerse fully in the daily language and life of Spain in a safe and comfortable environment
